Another novel-turned-into-movie… a girlie movie, I would say… if you like something light and easy, funny, relaxed.
I find it easy to relate myself to the movie, as in, at certain times, I had a certain level of shopping addiction. Not all times, just some. Who doesn’t? I mean, there’s nothing wrong with shopping, right? Shopping lifts you up, makes you feel good about yourself again. It’s like floating in cloud 9… and everything is so heavenly beautiful… But when the end of the month comes, the bills, the rejected cards, you fall back to reality. You wished you’ll strike the lottery. You wished that the debts will go away. You wished that overnight, you’re a millionaire, and you can buy anything in the world!
What’s interesting in this movie is that being a shopaholic is not a female problem, there are guys who can’t control their spending too… (Note the sessions at Shopaholic Anonymous)
So, today, I shall offer some tips on how to control your shopping spree:
(Reference: www.medicinenet.com)
First, we need to understand, WHY ONE BECOMES A SHOPAHOLIC?
- Shopping or spending money as a result of feeling angry, depressed, anxious, or lonely
- Feeling lost without credit cards -- actually going into withdrawal without them
- Buying items on credit, rather than with cash
- Describing a rush or a feeling of euphoria with spending
- Feeling guilty, ashamed, or embarrassed after a spending spree
- Lying about how much money was spent. For instance, owning up to buying something, but lying about how much it actually cost
- Thinking obsessively about money
- Spending a lot of time juggling accounts or bills to accommodate spending
Next, deciding whether it is a shopping spree or a something more serious, a hopping addiction :
- Spending over budget. Often times a person will spend over their budget and get into deep financial trouble, spending well above their income. The normal person will say, 'Oops, I can't afford to buy this or that.' But someone who has an addiction will not recognize the boundaries of a budget.
- Compulsive buying. When a person with a shopping addiction goes shopping, they often compulsively buy, meaning they go for one pair of shoes and come out with 10.
- It's a chronic problem. A shopping addiction is a continuous problem
- Hiding the problem. Shopoholics will hide their purchases because they don't want their significant other to know they bought it because they'll be criticized. They may have secret credit card accounts, too.
- A vicious circle. Some people will take their purchases back because they feel guilty. That guilt can trigger another shopping spree, so it's a vicious circle
- Impaired relationships. It is not uncommon for us to see impairments in relationships from excessive spending or shopping. Impairment can occur because the person spends time away from home to shop, covers up debt with deception, and emotionally and physically starts to isolate themselves from others as they become preoccupied with their behavior.
- Clear consequences. The hallmark is loss of control. If they are no longer in control of their shopping but their shopping is in control of them, they've crossed the line.

Lastly, HOW TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM???
- Admit that you are a compulsive spender, which is half the battle
- Get rid of checkbooks and credit cards, which fuel the problem
- Don't shop by yourself because most compulsive shoppers shop alone and if you are with someone you are much less likely to be spend
- Get help.
- Take professional help and speak to wise and empathetic non-shopoholic friends who can offer unbiased moral support and positive encouragement to help you overcome your addiction.
- Chalk out a budget and ascertain a fixed amount, which you can spend on your personal shopping. Categorize items on your shopping list as necessities, comforts and luxuries. Try to minimize expenses on luxuries and judiciously monitor purchases of comforts.
- Identify all the stages in the compulsive buying cycle- the triggers, feelings, dysfunctional thoughts, typical behavior and consequences. Try to break the vicious cycle of shopping sprees.
- Don’t subscribe to shopping catalog's. Don’t even visit sales or discount warehouses as they may make you spend more in the long run. Avoid watching shopping programs on TV and try not to obsess over advertisements in magazines and newspapers. Divert your attention when you come across such advertisements. Also avoid window-shopping as before long you may end up in purchasing what you covet for but can’t really afford.
- Find other meaningful ways to spend time. Keep yourself busy throughout the day in work and various other hobbies. Don’t allow shopping to be your major or only hobby.
- Try to be farsighted. Understand that saving money will help you to buy an asset your family really wants in the future - a house or a car – or be used for emergencies and dry days.

i carry your heart, i carry it in my heart....
and i did, several times...
My Valentine's probably started like this....

with a Forensic Exam...
cramming all the facts in my head...
Hangging, Strangulation, Drowning, Burns, Lightning, Road Traffic Accidents, Gun-shoot wounds, sudden deaths,
Signs of death, post-mortem changes, types of wounds,
hypostasis, contact whitening, time of death,
Adipocere, Mummification, Maceration,
Cause, Manner, Mode,
Natural, Homicide, Suicide, Accidental...
child abuse, abortion, sexual crime, surgical procedure associated,
medico-legal aspects,
etc, etc, etc...
don't get me wrong,
Forensic is very interesting...
but i just hate exams,
that's all...
and i was sick,
so very sick...
AEBA secondary to URTI,
with a terrible flu,
a painful throat...
stress-induced?
yup, i was falling sick, with forennnsicccc...
and of all day,
today...
i can't decide which is worse,
not having a person to share valentine's,
or having a person, but not having to share it with him/her...
or sharing it with someone you don't really liked...
breaking up on Valentine's?
or losing your loved ones to God on Valentines..
i did wonder for a moment,
whether Valentine's was Satan's evil idea,
and therefore Singles Awareness Day
and Black Day
were created.....
Anyway, my day improved,
i went shopping later in the evening..
i think i overcame the anti-valentine's feelings..
haha!
but i also i think i overspent...
well, i didn't think so when i was spending though..
haha...
anyway, back to my header...
i thought this was nice...
but hey,
whether single or attached,
whether together or apart,
whether if he's across the ocean,
Valentine's is a time for Love...
please don't hate Valentines..
so here's a poem,
by E E Cummings:
(so i had this in my mind, and designed a new header...)
(i carry it in my heart)
i am never without it
(anywhere i go you go, my dear;
and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling)
I fear no fate
(for you are my fate, my sweet)
i want no world
(for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;
which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

What type of writer should you be?
I was just dropping by shinLoo's blog.
The result is very cute.... maybe one day i should try writing something different~ hmm...
Try the test for yourself here.
You Should Be a Romance Novelist |
You see the world as it should be, and this goes double for all matters of the heart. You can find the romance in any situation, and you would make a talented romance story writer... And while you may be a traditional romantic, you're just as likely to be drawn to quirky or dark love stories. As long as it deals with infatuation, heartbreak, and soulmates - you could write it. |

Manglish
i think it's okay to use Manglish, as long as you can also switch to proper English when you want/need to (eg: in formal events) :)
Malaysia scored a victory when 'lah' was finally introduced into the official Oxford English Dictionary. However, most Malaysians were less happy to see the entry listed its usage as Singaporean English, rather than Malaysian English.
oh, i'm feeling sooooo Malaysian today~
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lah
(/lɑ́/ or /lɑ̂/), a multi purpose magic word used at the end of a sentence
Lah is often used with brusque, short, negative responses:
- Don't have, lah! (Brusque response to, "Lend me some money, can?")
- Don't know already, lah!(Brusque response to someone fumbling with an explanation. Mostly by Chinese.)
Lah is also used for reassurance:
- Don't worry, he can do it one lah - Don't worry, he can [do it].
- It's okay lah - It's all right.
Lah can also be used to emphasize items in a spoken list, appearing after each item in the list.
- They got sell Nasi Lemak lah, Roti Canai lah, Chapatti lah; Everything got lah!
nah
- Used when giving something to another person, often in a rude or impolite way.
- eg -Nah, take this!
meh
- Used when asking questions, especially when a person is skeptical of something.
- eg - Cannot meh?, Really meh?
liao
- Means "already"
- eg- No stock liao; i makan liao; angry liao?
ah/ ak
- Used at the end of sentences, unlike meh the question is rhetorical.
- Also used when asking a genuine question.
- Besides that, some people use it when referring to a subject before making a (usually negative) comment.
- eg Why is he like that ah?, Is that true ah?, My brother ah, always disturbs me!
lor
- Used when explaining something.
- Like that lor..
d/dy/ady/edy/ridy
- Derived from the word "already".
- Often used in online chatroom by the youth in Malaysia, although in speech, speakers will often pronounce as 'ridy'
- eg I eat 'd' 'loh', I eat 'ridy'
le
- Used to soften an order, thus making it less harsh, sometimes can be persuasive.
- eg Give me that le; come here le..
one/wan
- Used as an emphasis at the end of a sentence.
- Why is he so naughty one ah?
what
- Unlike British/American English, the word 'what' is often used as an exclamation mark, not just to ask a question.
- eg What! How could you do that?, I didn't take it what.
got/have
- Used as a literal translation from the Malay word 'ada'.
- The arrangement of words is often also literally translated.
- The use of this particular particle is widespread in Manglish, where 'got' is substituted for every tense of the verb 'to have'.
- eg You got/have anything to do? (Kamu ada apa-apa untuk buat?), Got or not? (Really?), Where got? (To deny something, as in Malay "Mana ada?", and also in Chinese "Nali you?" as spoken in Malaysia)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
some other Manglish terms i use
de
- revive from the Chinese word
-eg- i don't want de; go where de?
dapau
-means take away, comes from the Chinese word
-eg- can help me dapau?; i'll like to dapau
makan
-means eaten
-eg- makan liao? Wanna go where makan?
yaka?
-being skeptical about something
-like the term 'really?' in English
jom!
- requesting someone to join or participate or go somewhere
-eg- jom makan!
eiyerrr....
-often expressing grossness or disgust
-eg- eiyer, so geli....
-eg- eiyerrr, don't like this lar...
syok/syiok
-feeling happy beyond words, awesome
-eg- so syok!, syoknya!
terrer/cun/power
-
- cun can also used to describe a sexy girl
yamchar
-direct translation from Cantonese means 'drink tea', but in Manglish, means socializing with friends and having supper in a mamak store, usually at night.
-one of Malaysian's culture, is order a drink, eg: teh tarik (tea) or milo, and chat till past midnight, till the odd hours of the morning...
-eg- jom, yamchar!
mamak
-from the term mamak (a slang for Indian or Indian Muslims), it is used to refer to Indian restaurants in Malaysia, usually selling roti canai (fried flour) and satay.
minum
-revive from the Malay word which means 'drink', but in Manglish, usually alcoholic related
-eg- let's go minum!
tumpang
Gostan
-To reverse, especially in the context of driving motor vehicles.
-eg- i need to gostan my car.
pai-seh
- ashamed, embarrassed/embarrassing. 'pai seh' is of Hokkien origin
-eg- I kena punish lah... very pai-seh eh!
die
- a very interesting work used in tight situation, when facing a difficult problem. it does not means that he/she want to commit suicide.
-eg- Die-lah!
action - show-off
aiksy/lan si - arrogant, overconfident. 'Aiksy' possibly derived from 'acting up'; 'lan si' is of Cantonese origin.
blur- confused, out-of-it. Roughly equivalent to "spacey" in American slang.
slumber - relaxed, laid-back; possibly a conflation of the Malay "selamba", meaning nonchalant, and the English "slumber".
here are few more terms, and no, they are NOT proper English!
pass up – to hand in "Pass up your assignments"
rubber – meaning eraser as in "Can I borrow your rubber?"
spoil – to be damaged "This one, spoil, lah."
chop – to stamp (with a rubber stamp), as well as the stamp itself.
outstation - out of town
photostat - photocopy
mee - noodles
apa gui?
-i especially like this term, neologism invented by shinLoo, apa-in Malay language, gui-in Mandarin, basically used in frustration... a milder version of 'wtf!'...

Want to marry a doctor?
Anyway, i just got back from work, when my friend, Ric surprised me with a very interesting news from Reuters ^^ So, i shall not comment on it, but rather share the whole news clip with you...
The medical profession is the most trusted, most admired and most eligible marriage partners!!!OMG!! Now, that's interesting~ haha! (my lecturers and consultants would love to read this!)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Want to marry a doctor? Survey shows most do

Wed Dec 17, 10:37 pm ET
SINGAPORE (Reuters Life!) – It really does pay to be a doctor, with an international survey showing the medical profession is the most trusted, among the most admired and includes the most eligible marriage partners.
By contrast, actors and musicians, along with journalists and advertisers, were among professionals that people trusted the least, and were also least likely to choose a partner from, according to a survey by Synovate, the market research arm of Aegis Group plc.
"Much of who we are is tied up in what we do in the hours from nine to five, and often way beyond," a Synovate statement said.
"Asking someone what they do for a living is often the first question you ask them; right after 'what's your name?'."
The survey polled about 5,500 respondents in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Malaysia, South Africa and the United States.
It asked people what makes for an admirable job, which professions they trust or do not, who is overpaid, and which profession they would prefer to marry.
Sixteen percent nominated doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals as their preferred marriage partners, higher than any other profession.
Other eligible -- and admired -- professions were education, at 14 percent, and science and technology, at 10 percent.
Educators and doctors were also voted the most trusted by an overwhelming 86 and 87 percent, followed by homemakers and those in science and technology.
Only one percent picked retail professionals as partner-material, and those in media and marketing, as well as entertainers, did little better at two and three percent.
These professions were also among the least trusted by respondents, who, across the seven markets, picked the media as the single least trusted group.
Entertainers, along with corporate executives and lawyers, were voted as being the most overpaid, while homemakers and educators were among those seen as being underpaid.
