Last Memoirs of Teluk Intan – my diary

dear readers,
before reading, i need to forewarn you that this is a VERY lenghty post, which may take up some time.. but assuming if i wrote one post per day, it would be more of less, fair, oh well.. you may choose to skip between the lines, or follow sabahking's option, divide the post to several parts, and continue next time, when free, hehe..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 1 (Sunday night)

For the first time, I did not have baby to accompany me to Teluk Intan. He was still at the workshop, sigh.. Basically, I only packed 4 days clothes, as I was hoping to be back by Wednesday, to celebrate Christmas, hehe… And Aland was kind enough to tumpang us down.. We had the infamous Bidor’s Duck Noodles for dinner.. and the tasty, ‘woo kok’.. click here for pictures. Wonder whether will I be missing this..

I was sharing a house with Cheryl, Susan, Kuan Geok, Shu Juen and Sheau Yin- in the same house I stayed the 3 previous times!

At the strike of 12, we celebrated Cheryl’s birthday (again!) with some mild lychee volka, gin tonic and some chips… and spend the whole night playing truth or dare, spin the bottle. Ooo… it’s so nice revealing secrets, hehe…. But let’s keep that between the 4 walls ya.. ^^

===============================================================================================

Day 2 (Monday)

Nothing much, the usual first day syndrome, you don’t really feel like doing anything. Followed the rounds, attended clinics.. Dr Tay, the MO at HTI, a ex-UKM Graduate, was very nice to teach us during his clinics. He was very knowledgeable, makes me feel like we all should study harder. At the end of the clinics, we found out that Dr Tay and QKK’s sister were course mates! Other details, I was not too sure about it, so, I shan’t elaborate on it.. hehe..

6 of us crammed into Yu Zhi’s MyVi as we headed to T-Corner for lunch. This is a very nice place. I would highly recommend the French Fried Rice – delicious! I liked it with a cup of Earl Grey’s. Today, there was a ‘Christmas’ Promotion though. They were selling fried rice set (fried rice+ fried chicken with sauce+ fried egg + some vegetables) which cost only RM 1.99!! can you believe that? And drinks (ribena or orange juice) cost only RM0.99! making it a total of RM2.98!!! It’s been a very long time since I last had a decent meal which cost less than three ringgit, inclusive of drinks. (sorry, forgotten to take pictures, i am a failed blogger... but I remembered primus blogging about this place before.. he didn't take pics of the food though, sigh.. )

Dinner at a Riverview Seafood Restaurant. I think the food was just okay. Pictures with Bobo. (maybe, will post next time)

Oh yes, there’s one thing, I ‘so-must’ blog about.

Today, I did one of the stupidest things in Teluk Intan. Correction : We, all four of us : Honey, Shu Juen, Aland and I. I mean, it was Cheryl’s birthday, so we had to do something, right? So, guess what?? We went to the most ‘uncle’ karaoke in my life!! At least, that was what we thought. The place was called ‘Angel’ – above KFC.

Angel KTV Lounge - above KFC

I suppose there must have been many people singing like angels in that place.

An artistic painting of a lady with a cocktail - found in the room

Apparently, the place isn’t THAT uncle after all. I mean, they still had songs from our generation : Westlife, BSB, Shania Twain, MLTR, etc – perhaps, it was just us, getting older... The KTV was free, and you were only charged on drinks.. there was even a dance floor, (with the round disco light, haha) but no one dancing though… and guess what? We were the youngest people there!! the place was quite quiet… there was an uncle singing at the background. Nevertheless, we took the deluxe room, which cost like RM80.

The room was quite okay, just a little pricy, I thought. The auntie later gave us a discount and only charged us RM30 for the room. This kinda thing, only happens in Teluk Intan, I suppose, never in KL. The only thing I don’t like about the place was it was too smoky… I mean in Redbox, Greenbox, Neway, or other karaoke, you don’t go home with your hair smelling of cigarettes, right? Cigarettes should be banned in all karaoke!!

==============================================================================================

Day 3 (Tuesday)

I attended the Day Care OT today. I was shocked to see how the doctors here removed cysts and fibroadenoma, all under local!! Back in HUKM, you would need to book an Operation Theater and have an anesthetist stand by. I remembered observing Prof Rohaizak who did a removal of left Fibroadenoma of one of his patients under GA (General Anesthesia), as the patient requested to be sedated. And today, I saw not one, but two cases of fibroadenoma excision performed under local anesthesia!! Wow! Later on, I heard from Mr Vasu, that in peripheral hospitals, they can perform minor operations like hernia repair, under local as well. The surgeries at the minor OT, was swift, very swift.. in less than 2 hours, I saw 7 cases!

We had dinner at Al-Fresco today. It was Chew Yong’s birthday. (Happy birthday, CY!) Al-Fresco was a great place. Can you believe it, a steak house in Teluk intan?!?? And the thing is, the food here actually taste good, and the presentation is good too- can fight those steakhouse in KL, seriously.. I was like, ‘why didn’t we discover this place earlier?’

It was difficult to take pictures as the lights were very dim. Pictures with Bobo.

I had lamb shack grilled – awesome!

After the dinner, I did (correction: We did) another stupid thing. We were late for our night class with Mr Vasu. –part of the consequences of bringing classes forward. There was this myth that Mr Vasu would canceled classes if students were late. So, we rushed back home to change, only to find out that we did not had keys to our house (the girl’s apartment). We were in singlets, baby-Ts and shorts – not the appropriate ward-attire, huh? Kuan Geok had like very short shorts, with flowers somemore! So, we were in the dilemma of whether to go back to the restaurant to get the keys. But, that way, we’ll never make it in time. Then QKK, came up with a super smart idea – pinjam my housemates white coats la, he said, no one would notice.. the doctors would think you were wearing blouses with skirts.

Having not much choice, we followed his ‘super smart’ idea.. I still distinguishly remembered, the moment I put on Hong Tee’s oversize long sleeves white coat, everyone in the house burst out laughing.. They said we looked as if not wearing anything underneath, like some flasher or something, sigh… my coursemates have weird sense of humour.. =( and NO, no pictures! *pout*

Anyway, I exchanged white coats for one with short sleeves.. looked more ‘normal’.. Cheryl borrowed Chee Soon’s White Coat, which was pretty funny as well, as later she noticed that it lacked 2 buttons! Haha!

Upon arrival at Surgery Ward 1, we found ourselves early, and had to wait for Mr Vasu. Guess what? We passed the Lingesh test! Yeay!! He didn’t notice our attire… (Lingesh, if you were wondering why we were acting rather weird the other day, now you know why la…. Hehe… you were right, we used to be more enthusiastic in the wards).

To think back, I think, we were all very childish that day.. i mean, would it be unprofessional for doctors or medical students to dress up in singles/spaghettis and shorts in the wards?? Hmm.. maybe I should post a poll on that.. hmm.. don’t get me wrong.. I always wear formal attire to the wards.. (except the time we got locked out) At least, we were trained to do so.. the guys even had to wear neck ties despite the hot weather.. THANK GOD HUKM is air-conditioned =) I wonder what about other universities.. perhaps, private universities are less strict about their dress code, no?

===========================================================================

Day 4 (Wednesday)

Our last day here… was already in the ‘going-home’ mood.. I successfully inserted a branula for a 9 year old kid, and he said it was not as painful as expected… *happy*… talking to kids and distracting them, really works! I think branula insertion is an addiction…

i saw anew admission with a patient with over 90% burns at the burn unit. The patient don't really feel the pain anymore, with the epidermis and dermis layer burned, most of the pain receptors were dead as well.. He was suffering from multi-organ damage.. You can see fluid oozing from his body.. It was an occupational accident where he accidentally fell into the hot water tub in his workplace.... and he was only 25 years old... so sad..

Oh yes, I have 2 very interesting Xrays for you: We saw this at the wards, 70 year old, Chinese Man came in with abdominal pain, in shock.

Chest Xray

Abdominal X ray

(can you see what it is? - answers in comment)

We had Mc Breakfast at the new McD in Teluk Intan. Yes, you heard me right, there's a McD in teluk Intan!! yeay! it opened last Saturday!

The RM4 Mc Breakfast set (i took tea instead of coffee)

Cheryl, QKK, Soong Joo, and I took the 3.30pm bus home… yippie… can’t wait to be back for Christmas!

Good bye, Teluk Intan~

I think I might actually miss you.. but I doubt I’ll ever be back.. =P

My Diary in Teluk Intan

DAY 1 (Mon)
First day, at Teluk Intan. Not too bad. Time flies, right? Looking forward to tomorrow.

DAY 2 (Tues)

The patients here were really nice. Presented 2 cases. Today was asthma day. Feeling lazy…, chatted all night with Susie and Shu Juen, they must have contracted shinyin’s-lazy-virus. Had the infamous Teluk Intan Chee Chong Fun (pig intestines shaped flour desserts), still good, but I still preferred Hong Kong’s Chee Chong Fun.
It rained today.

(the chee chong fun it's more delicious than it looks, i need a new camera.. this cam phone can't take the mouth-watering effect)

DAY 3 (Wed)
Dr Wong Sau Wei visited today, super stressed. Realized I had forgotten EVERYTHING we learnt in pre-clinical years. Shinyin, insaflah… will start studying…. *motivated*
It rained again today.

DAY 4 (Thu)

Started feeling lazy, again. Motivation is very short lived. I was considering whether to send the clothes to the drycleaners, but it was too expensive, and surely, I can’t be THAT spoilt, my mum would kill me. So, I did my laundry, missed the washing machine, BADLY…
It rained AGAIN, today. My clothes will never get dried. Why my friends were not replying my sms? siGh… and poor suk teng fell sick, hopes she get better soon.. Felt so bored… started writing again…. and resorted to movies- marathoned the whole series of ‘I not stupid 2’…

DAY 5 (Fri)
Too few patients in Teluk Intan. Today was seizure day. Seen all the patients in the Paediatric ward, I do not know what else to do. I’m super bored… Friends in KL enjoying themselves, jealous... will be spending my weekend here in Teluk Intan – a very unusual way to punish myself…
It rained AGAIN, twice today. Life was so depressing. People must have thought I was crazy, playing the imaginary keyboard. I missed home.

DAY 6 (Sat)
I woke up at 11am today. The life here in Teluk Intan is so sedentary. If I go on sleeping, I can qualify for the P-I-G title.. sigh.. continued movie marathon… missed speaking in English. Ate the worst ‘loh mai kai’ (Glutinous Steam Rice with chicken) in my life! But lunch at T-corner was good, had French Fried Rice with a cup of Earl Grey.
And yes, it rained again.

DAY 7 (Sun)
I am so bored, I am drowning ants. Experimenting whether ants can swim, how long they can survive on surface tension, how they can survive a whirlpool. Yes, the evil shinyin is killing all the irritating ants. and Suk Teng thought i was being a sadist... it's just the boredom, really....
It rained again. I want to online.

DAY 8 (Mon)

Something scary happened today… CORRECTION: Something stupid happened today… or rather, it was just me, being stupid….

DAY 9 (Tues)

I know, it’s stupid to hate this place… fine, laugh all you want =P ….
on-called today…..

DAY 10 (Wed)

Waiting to go home~~~ counting days…..

DAY 11 (Thu)
Going back to HUKM! Yeay!!! Goodbye Teluk Intan.. i shan't miss you :P

EXAM next week….. wish me luck! =)

p/s: i enjoyed the infamous Bidor's Dark Thigh Noodles on the way home... the noodles is similar to wantan noodles, only more crunchy and it's home-made, i heard.. the herbal soup is a great combination.... taste awesome! a-must-try! :) i wonder why we can't find this in KL...
(the infamous Bidor's Duck Thigh Noodles)

(tasty desserts)

COAMS #43 - shinyin’s 3 weeks at Teluk Intan, Perak…

DAY 1 (tue)
Droved 3 hours ++ to Teluk Intan, broke the [shinyin’s longest distance ever drove non-stop book of record]… Discovered 7 things in Teluk Intan:
1. My room is SUPER HOT
2. My new housemates are weird.
3. No washing machine
4. The toilet lamp is spoilt!!
5. Worse, NO INTERNET!!
6. yeah, and no chinese food stalls or sundry shops within 5km away from our hostel.. Nat and I searched like nearly an hour for a sundry shop..
7. WHAT?? There is no cinema or shopping malls in Teluk Intan??? The nearest is in Ipoh, 1 and a half hours away… OMG…. How do the young people survive here???
I wonder whether I could survive 3 days, let alone 3 weeks.. sigh.. I missed home already…. I missed HUKM…

DAY 2 (wed)
The hospital’s architectural is a little ‘different’. Most of the buildings, eg the clinics, are single floor… too much space wastage, I thought… and the labour room and the clinics were like more than 10minutes walk apart… what would happened if there was an emergency?? There were no scan machine in the wards, patient had to walk (yes, walk) all the way to the labour room for a scan.. I could go on and on about ‘when I build a hospital, I would do this, and that…’ but of course, I would never build a hospital, unless of course if I were either suddenly super rich, or if they have The Sims Hospital or something like that….
p/s: I want to online
oh yes, important to note, Dr Lim YH belanja us lunch today!! Walau, we had lunch with our doctor; she was friendly but super demotivating,… shared with us how she regretting taking medicine as a profession, it’s a lifetime sacrifice, she said.. sigh.. I was motivation-deprived

DAY 3 (thu)
Dr H compliment my case presentation today, funny, it did not send a gush of euphoric energy all over me…. I was indifferent… I think I left my passion for medicine (if any) in HUKM…. Note: if any..
First on-call day: conducted only one delivery today. The patients are very few today, but midwives here were super nice. A doctor today, let’s call her dr H, said: priority to conduct deliveries is given to HOs (house officers).. I need to train my staff, she said…. sigh.. now we have to compete with the HO… endless deliveries in Hospital Teluk Intan?-my seniors tipu me =(

DAY 4 (fri)
Post-called syndrome…. After sleep deprivation for over 30hours, totally a zombie at class…
Later figure out that Dr H is the specialist here. She’s super cool and super nice… and she wears only black and white…. I wished all lecturers are as nice as her, no offence…
I did my laundry today!! Yeay! First time to hand wash ever since 1st year orientation week…. Which was like, ermmm… 4 years ago….

DAY 5(sat)
It’s the end of the week already… time flies, and I can’t believe that I am actually still surviving without an internet and without a washing machine… I discovered 6 new things :
1. My new housemates are pretty cool…in fact, they have a great sense of humour and they are super hilarious!! We could actually crap like ALL NIGHT,.. wow!
2. Overally, I adapted well with no internet and no washing machine.
3. I learnt to bathe in the dark
4. The infamous Teluk Intan Chee Chong Fun is superb!! But u must buy from the original manufacturer, which is a small house, and you need to line up to get your freshly made Chee Chong Fun!! RM 3 for 2 Chee Chong Fun!! but, it was worth it, totally!!
5. There were no young people in Teluk Intan.. only extreme ages of children and really old folks,.. which explains the lack of entertainment… even the kareokes and clubs were so ‘uncle’… Got stars somemore, on the signboards…

DAY 6 (sun)

Spent the whole day in Labour Room today only to have ZERO conducts…. There were NO patients today, sigh… except for a twin pregnancy, which we get to witness… but not conduct, of course,… only the MOs(Medical Officer) or specialist were allowed to conduct twin deliveries here…. But the case is rather interesting with one baby in cephalic presentation, and the second in transverse lie. Dichorionic, Diamniotic, good prognosis.
p/s: Hui Teng’s mum bought lunch for us today, all the way from Pantai Remis!! Yummie!!

DAY 7(mon)
Monday blues.. I want to online..

DAY 8(tue)
On-call again, I’m starting to hate on-calls,.. my enthusiasms level has dropped to zero.. I hate seeing the HOs, as they reminds me of me, being in their shoes next year,.. to oncall every alternate days (3-4times per week, do your calculation), and still be in the topmost condition,… this is 2 years… a houseman complaint that she has no life… I only replied: if it’ll make you feel better, my housemanship is 2 years, which is a year longer that yours… sigh..

DAY 9 (wed)
Now my housemates are commenting on
1. my chemotherapy hair falling
2. the way I walk
3. my socks
4. my skirts
5.everything!!
Sigh…

P/s: I am bored, I want to online…

DAY 10(thu)
I am so bored… so bored to the extend that if any guy asked me out today, I would say yes…

DAY 11(fri)
On-Call again??? on calls never ends huh?? Who made the timetable?? How come so many shifts???

DAY 12(sat)
I played computer games all day till 5am… that’s over 12hours of pc games! it’s crazy!! It’s either PMS (pre-menstrual-syndrome) or internet-withdrawal syndrome.. totally no mood today!! I don’t even wanna blog… i need any form of survival pills, any thing to boost my endorphins level, I need to get out of this place…..

DAY 13(sun)
I went to Pantai Remis today and ate seafood ALL DAY!! Yeay!!! Took 4 tablet of desloratidine (the MOST potent anti-histamine to prevent allergies) and I was symptom-free!! Hurray!!! Hui Teng belanja somemore, hehe… then we went to Lumut to buy satay fish…. Discovered that Shavyn loves to sing and is pretty out-going, and Poh Sin is the woodest wood-head on Earth!! What a perfect couple! Haha!!
New batch of friends arrived from HUKM, things would be much merrier…

DAY 14(mon)
Another on-call day?? Will this ever end??? Dr H wore a blue shirt to work today, I can’t help noticing, it was, for the first time, not black or white… I did my partogram homework today.. Happily completed my 3 pages write up only to find that Prof Adeeb demands a detailed report of over 10pages long!! OMG!! Kill me de.. why other groups don’t have to do partograph homework??

Something new for a change: my housemates were discussing foreplay today… my housemate, our sex expert shared her knowledge on the 7 most sensitive parts in a human anatomy…

DAY 15(tues)
I wanna go home~~~ *sob* *sob*

DAY 16(wed)
Savouring the last day at teluk intan,.. I wonder whether I’ll miss this place…..
p/s: petrol station packed with cars today…. sigh..

DAY 17(thu)
BACK!!! YIPPIE!!! (((( I know it’s only Thursday, but at this point, who cares??)))
Teluk Intan is not too bad.. but I wouldn’t want to spend my life there,… this place seriously have no life… then again, HO-ship has no life either, oh well….

of love

Today, i heard a story which was not a story of falling...
of living in the dark end of winter turmoil..
instead, it was a love story..
of a couple who did not live happily ever after...
but they live, loving each other..
